Lazy Hazy Days in Coastal California
Written by Isabella Joiner, age 15, traveler, aspiring writer and photographer
If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit the coast of California, you know the wonders of its jagged cliffs, hazy sunshine, and beautiful blue waves
The rolling grass hills and scattered cattle that come with driving up the winding Route 1 is a cure and spiritual mend for the exhaustion of everyday life.
My favorite spot in all of this is Point Reyes National Seashore, because of its unexpected cold water on a 70-degree summer day and remote-feeling, utterly enveloping persona. Going fast on winding, rocky-edged roads, windows down, hand sun-kissed and absorbing a sweet, welcoming beach breeze, or saying quick hellos to overhead birds who dance in the wind make moments I want to stretch into forever and provide memories to nestle into when back in my regular life.
Everything from the people to the sunshine differently than they do anywhere else, giving a warmth that is so much more than physical. Stress from the pressure of teenage reality such as past and forthcoming school years and tedious relationships melt away. I can’t believe it was just last week I was sipping iced maté and listening to dreamy surf rock as I wandered the many miles of tall grass and wildflowers. Built-up tension calcified by questionable decisions released, I let go of the gloomy clouds that had blocked my train of thought. I can’t exactly pinpoint exactly how or what about this area does this for me – maybe it’s the way everything feels like a happy, hazy dream, a daydream that’s taken physical form.
I go to the coast of California and never want to leave. It’s my own cornucopia of happiness, and the one place I always look forward to going back to.
