The Surprising Truth About Melatonin Supplements

Over a quarter of Americans use melatonin as a sleep aid. If more people knew the truth about melatonin supplements, that number would be significantly less. 


FACT #1. MELATONIN SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT NATURAL


The melatonin found in most supplements is a synthetic hormone created in a lab. Some supplements use “natural” melatonin that comes from the pineal gland of slaughtered cows and may pose a risk due to contamination with animal viruses and environmental toxins.


FACT #2. MELATONIN IS HIGHLY UNREGULATED


A study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that nearly 90% of melatonin products were mislabeled. MIT scientists found the ideal dosage of melatonin to be 0.3mg, yet most supplements contain a minimum of 3mg, at least 10x the recommended dose.


FACT #3. MELATONIN HAS SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS


The many side effects of melatonin include anxiety, depression, headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, stomach cramps, tremors, and decreased libido. Many people describe feeling hungover after taking Melatonin.


FACT #4. MELATONIN IS HABIT FORMING


Taking melatonin supplements can interfere with your body’s natural production of melatonin by signaling to you body that it doesn’t need to produce as much melatonin naturally. This can lead to a reduction in your body’s own production of natural melatonin and a dependence on synthetic melatonin supplements for sleep. Melatonin supplements can also disrupt your body’s natural circadian rhythm, which is responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycles. This disruption can lead to further imbalances in your body’s natural melatonin production. 


FACT #5.  MELATONIN IS NOT FOR EVERYONE 


Like pharmaceutical sleeping pills, no amount of melatonin should be considered safe. Melatonin is particularly unsafe for people with certain medical conditions, including autoimmune diseases, seizure disorders, liver disease, and depression.
