The 7 Types of Rest

As anyone experiencing burnout can tell you, sleep and rest are not always one and the same. The reason it's not uncommon to wake up after a full 8 hours still feeling exhausted is because sleep is just one of seven types of rest that are crucial for optimal health physically, mentally, and emotionally. Recognizing which types of rest you need and making time for them can significantly improve your overall wellbeing and quality of life.

1. PHYSICAL REST

What it is: Physical rest involves giving your body a break from physical activity and exertion.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling tired, achy, sore, and under the weather

How to get more: Get more quality sleep, lay down for nap, take a warm bath, get a massage, spend time in nature

2. MENTAL REST

What it is: Mental rest involves giving your mind a break from cognitive tasks and mental stimulation.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling foggy, forgetful and frazzled

How to get more: Schedule short breaks, step outdoors for a moment, make a list, practice mindfulness, listen to calming music, spend time in nature

3. SENSORY REST

What it is: Sensory rest involves reducing exposure to sensory stimuli, such as loud noise, bright lights, and digital screens.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling overstimulated and overwhelmed

How to get more: Close your eyes for a minute, put your devices on airplane mode, tidy up your space, spend time in nature

4. CREATIVE REST

What it is: Creative rest involves giving your mind a break from brainstorming and problem-solving and reawakening a feeling of awe and wonder.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling bored and uninspired

How to get more: Start a new creative project, go to a museum, make a bouquet of wildflowers, learn watercolor painting, spend time in nature

What it is: Emotional rest is about taking time to process and release emotions, reducing emotional stress, and creating a sense of emotional balance.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling undervalued, unappreciated, or unloved

How to get more: Talk to supportive family or friends, seek professional help, set boundaries, do something that brings you joy, spend time in nature

6. SOCIAL REST

What it is: Social rest refers to taking time for yourself and having solitude when you need it.

Signs you’re not getting enough: Feeling drained and stretched thin

How to get more: Schedule quality alone time, set boundaries, take a rain check, spend time in nature
