How to Change Habits — Once and For All

We are all creatures of habit. Our busy brains really like to conserve brain power and habits are a chance for them to just go on autopilot. Thankfully, researchers have figured out how to hack our brains so we can change our habits. 

MIT researchers found that every habit has three parts. This is called the habit loop.

1/ A cue — this is what triggers the habit.

2/ A routine — this is the actual habit.

3/ A reward — this is what drives the habit.

According to Charles Duhigg, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and best-selling author of The Power of Habit, we have the ability to change any habit in our lives. He says: “To change a habit, you must keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine.” When you can anticipate your triggers, you can plan out new behavior.

He shares this simple framework for how to change a habit:
